Two points to this thread:
1. To find out if anyone is interested in playing pick up games on a week night
2. I am going to describe the game setup my friends and I used to use when playing pick up games. Mainly to suggest what I found to work well for pick up games, but I also would like to start some discussion on what other people have used in the past, for some idea sharing.
I was wondering if anyone had interest in starting up something like this:
In my 20's, I would organize a weeknight wiffle game. We had a core group of about 8 people. We played on Wednesday nights at 9pm at a municipal roller hockey rink that had lights until 11pm or midnight. On any given week we would have between 6 to 12 people show up; choose teams and play on.
The rink was in the city of Philadelphia; and we always had a cooler of adult refreshments. Since two of my friends were Police Officers (and we didn't act like jerks), we never had any issues.
The Field worked out like this:
-The strike zone was at mid rink with home plate a few feet in front. I constructed the zone out of PVC and had a net, like a street hockey goal. A "Goal" was a strike.
-The back fence behind the goal area was the home run fence, and was about 10ft high.
-Fair/ Foul in the outfield was were the 10 ft fence started and ended. This was a less than a 90 degree arc, probably more like 75 degrees, but worked out well.
- So the homerun distance was about 95 feet with a 10 ft fence to clear.
- Gameplay: We had no baserunning. Hitting the fence in the air was a triple; hitting the ball in the air past the goal line was a double. Cleanly fielded grounders were outs. "Baserunners" had to be pushed.
- Ground balls had to get past the blue line to be fair.
- "Mound" was 42ft from home plate.
This made it very easy to show up and play within minutes, and leave without much clean-up.
Any one interested in playing games around 7 on a weeknight?
Any suggestions on roller hockey rinks in the area that have lights? I understand that it will most likely will be minus the cooler of deliciousness.
